Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The Utah Family Defenders Association (UFDA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit that is funded by the State of Utah to provide training and assistance to attorneys who represent parents in Utah’s juvenile courts.  The UFDA’s contract is managed by the Indigent Defense Commission. The Executive Director of the UFDA is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the organization and answers to the Board of Directors and, and works closely with the Indigent Defense Commission in performing the following duties:

  • Plan and execute Continuing Legal Education (CLE) seminars and conferences for members including a 2-day annual conference, and 3 other training events, held once per quarter. These can include state-wide trainings, virtual trainings, hybrid trainings, or local lunch events catered towards the specific needs of a particular judicial district;

  • Maintain database and communicate with members;

  • Maintain and update website (HTML not required, needed updates are provided to the subcontractor managing the website);

  • Work with Board of Directors to provide training materials to members, such as Practice Guidebook and other deliverables as they are needed;

  • Maintain collaborative relationships with state, local and community partners (Court Improvement Program, Attorney General’s Office, Office of the Guardian ad Litem, DCFS, etc.);

  • Represent the interest of parental representation attorneys and families in various child welfare community working groups, particularly those that impact legislative and policy forming issues;

  • Update members on child welfare laws and matters using emails and training events;

  • Perform bookkeeping functions and oversee budget;

  • Draft reports and submit invoices pursuant to contract with the State of Utah;

  • Assist the IDC with Annual Report Information for the Child Welfare Legislative Oversight Committee

  • Complete the Request for Proposal when the current contract with the State of Utah expires; and

  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.

Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:

  • JD or Executive experience required

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with members and the general public

  • Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Google Drive and virtual meeting platforms, including Zoom, Webex, and Google Meets)

  • Bookkeeping and accounting proficiency (Quickbooks)

  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion

  • Self-motivating and ability to work without oversight

  • Experience in the Child Welfare field preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the IDC, ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards.

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs

  • Must be able to talk, listen and speak clearly on telephone/virtual meetings
